For the People, By the People
Who is responsible for organizing it all? Well, people called elected officials are picked by County residents during an election to run County government. These people include the Mayor, who is elected by all County residents, and the Board of County Commissioners, who are elected by the people who live in areas known as districts. There are 13 districts in Miami-Dade County, one for every Commissioner! You can find out which district you live in, and who your commissioner is by clicking here.
The primary job of elected officials is to listen to what County residents think and need, whether it’s a new library, an affordable place to live, more policemen and firemen, or help in solving money problems.Residents can find out where to contact their elected official by calling 3-1-1.
Once the Commissioners hear about what residents have to say, they get together about twice a month during Board of County Commission meetings to discuss the things that need to be done and vote on those that seem to be the most important. The Mayor takes a look at this list and has a chance to vote himself if he doesn’t agree. You can watch these meetings on TV through your government access channel, or you can watch them online.
