Welcome to CraftMasters!
Remember to always be careful when you try these crafts out!
And be sure to check with your parents before getting started!

Paper Baskets

Materials:
Newspaper
Scissors
Glue stick
Tape
Craft paints and brushes

Step 1:
Make a reed out of a 13 1/2- by 22-inch sheet of newspaper. Starting with a long edge, tightly roll the sheet into a tube. Flatten the tube and use a glue stick to secure the open edge. Assemble seven more reeds.

Step 2:
Lay four of the reeds side by side on a flat surface and weave in the remaining four. Slide the strips together to make the bottom of the basket. Fold the ends of the reeds up to form the side spokes.

Step 3:
Now, cut newspaper sheets into four 11- by 27-inch rectangles. Using the same method as before, roll four more reeds. Tape the end of a reed to the base of a spoke. Weave the reed in and out of the spokes, around the basket.

Step 4:
Tuck the end behind a spoke. Weave in the other reeds, one above the other. Fold the tops of the spokes into the basket and tuck them behind a reed.

Step 5:
Use craft paints to coat the finished basket inside and out, then add decorative symbols.

Jelly Bean Carrots

Materials:
Disposable clear plastic icing bags
Orange jelly beans
Scissors
Green tissue paper
Twist ties

Step 1:
Fill an icing bag with orange jelly beans, leaving at least 3 inches unfilled at the top.

Step 2:
Cut out two 8-inch squares of green tissue paper and lay one on top of the other.

Step 3:
Pick up the squares from the center and give them a little twist so you have a cone-shaped carrot top.

Step 4:
Place the tissue, twisted end down, into the bag.

Step 5:
Gather the bag at the top of the jelly beans and secure with a twist tie, wrapping the tie around the "stem" of the tissue paper, so the greenery sticks out of the top.

Personalized Magnets

Materials
Unlined, colored index cards
Colored markers
Glue
Magnetic tape (sold at most office supply stores)
Family photographs

Step 1:
Come up with a basic shape or design that can serve as a backdrop for each photo. If Uncle Thomas is an architect, for example, you might decide on a house. For a veterinarian, you could choose a pet; for a teacher, an apple; and so on.

Step 2:
Cut out the shapes from the colored index cards and use the markers to embellish them.

Step 3:
Next, trim the photos and glue them onto the cutouts. Add captions, if you'd like.

Step 4:
Finally, glue pieces of magnetic tape to the backs, and the photos are ready to place on the door.

Bakeable "Salt Clay"

Materials:
2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 to 1 1/2 cups cold water
2 tablespoons cooking oil
Cookie Sheet
Aluminum foil

Step 1
Stir together the plain flour, salt, cold water and cooking oil.

Step2
Knead well until it forms a soft ball. Line a baking tray with aluminum foil, make the shapes you want, and bake in the oven at 300 degrees or until hard (about one hour).

Note: Use cookie cutters or mold Salt Clay by hand, then bake in a 300 degree oven for use in creating refrigerator magnets, jewelry, ornaments, keychains, necklaces, and more.

You can use food coloring to color dough before you bake it, or paint it afterwards. A finishing coat of shellac or clear acrylic will make your salt clay products last longer.

Paper Airplanes

Materials:
Paper

Easy Instructions:

Starting with an 8 1/2 x 11" sheet of paper, fold the paper in half lengthwise. Next, fold down the corners as shown in the figure below. Then fold each side down to the center again, and then again as shown in the illustration below. If desired, planes may be decorated with crayons, markers, stickers, etc.

Bubbles

Materials:
1 cup water
1/3 cup dish soap
2 Tablespoons light corn syrup

Easy Instructions:
Combine ingredients and enjoy. If you don't have bubble blowers around the house, be creative and try using different objects from your utensil drawer, (e.g., apple corer, potato masher, handle of a basting brush, etc.)

Finger Paint

Materials:
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 cups water
food coloring

Step 1
Mix ingredients in saucepan.

Step 2
Boil until mixture thickens.

Step3
Allow to cool, then pour into jars or other storage containers and color with food coloring. Best used on a glossy paper, such as butcher or shelf paper.

Making Slime

Materials:
Corn starch
Water
Food coloring (optional)

Easy Instructions:
Put cornstarch in bowl. Add enough water to make a paste. If desired, you may also add food coloring. This makes a messy slime that goes from liquid to solid, and is great fun to play with.

Colorific Rice Collage

Materials:
1 cup rice
Approximately 1 teaspoon rubbing alcohol
Food coloring
Paper
Elmer's glue

Step 1
To color rice, add a few drops of food coloring to alcohol in a jar or ziploc bag.

Step2
Add rice and shake. Let dry on waxed paper.
Caution: This makes a MESS! Wear an apron and cover work area with newspaper.

Step 3
Put some glue on a piece of paper and sprinkle rice onto it.

If you don't have the time or the patience to make colored rice, kids can also make great collages using any number of everyday items. If you have noodles, beans, split peas or other dry goods in your cupboard, you have the makings for a fun and interesting collage.

Pinecone Bird Feeders

Materials:
Large pinecones
Peanut butter (Birds prefer chunky over smooth!)
Shortening
Cornmeal
Birdseed (optional)
Fishing line, string or yarn

Step 1
Wrap and tie string to top of pinecone.

Step 2
Mix peanut butter, shortening, (such as bacon fat or melted suet), and cornmeal.

Step 3
Then, spread the mixture onto a large pinecone. Hang your bird feeder in a spot where you can watch the birds eat. Note: If you use smooth instead of chunky peanut butter, you may want to mix in a little bird seed for added interest and enjoyment.

Did you know? Birds have trouble digesting peanut butter! It can also get stuck in their beaks. This is why bird experts recommend the addition of shortening and cornmeal when preparing homemade birdfeeders of this type.
